Spoiler alert: the Knicks won! And I care
Every Ass Morning In June: a daily ongoing stream of cawnsciousness (Day 10)
Knicks in five! Whatever the hell that means. I did learn what it means but I’m two martinis deep and I actually might not know what it means. Basically, the Knicks have to…win….at least…four games…but since they lost the last one….now it’s five? Or something like that.
Summer has descended on the city and it’s wearing blue and orange, two colors that I don’t really own any statement pieces in. I actually have a really cute pair of orange socks but I could only find one of them so right now I’m wearing mismatched Ralph Lauren socks. One blue and one light blue. I used to have a Knicks shirt from New York or Nowhere but I sold it to the thrift store for $8 store credit a few months ago. Note to self: always hold onto random sports merch, just in case there happens to be an unavoidable slew of games coming up.
This whole Knicks moment kind of feels like Halloween in the city: it’s 19 nights long and there’s pressure to go out for all of them. I’m a little too old for FOMO, but its tentacles can still reach far and grip tight. I opted out of Monday’s festivities, choosing instead to build an IKEA nightstand (I still have to build the other) on my living room floor while The Social Network played ambiently in the background. Fool me once, I’ll build some furniture. Fool me twice? I’ll try to find some orange socks and join the masses.
Tonight there was a party for fellow Substacker Carson Griffith’s Rich People Shit newsletter at The Manner on Thompson street in Soho. I was planning to go as a normal cocktail party attendee until the Knicks game threw a curveball (sorry) (is that even a basketball term?) onto the evening and turned the latter half into a viewing party. So now I have to wear a jersey? They even updated the invite to include game-viewing details.
WAIT OK THEY JUST WON! Spoiler alert! I’m writing this at 11:33 PM and I just heard screams coming from outside and I knew. WOW! That’s what happens when Taylor Swift is in the room, people!
Wait, ok. Where was I. The party at The Manner hotel. Wait this is so fun! Harry, focus. The apartment above me is very excited, lots of movement. Should I start jump roping and add to the hoopla?
Anyway, we were at The Manner hotel, which used to be the SIXTY Hotel, where I used to be a room service boy in 2017. 2018? I used to sit there, in a closet in the basement, waiting for people to call down and order a burger. It was fun to be there tonight as a guest enjoying the renovated lobby and drinking martinis from a cart in the corner, manned by two bartenders.
There’s really no point to this post other than I’m upholding my promise of posting here on Substack every day this month. There’s rumors of crazy storms, hail and thunder included, hitting the city tomorrow, so stay tuned for that. Otherwise, I’ll let you celebrate the Knicks winning the…5th game? Or whatever the hell is happening out there at Madison Square Garden right now! Can I phone a friend Haim sister?
Celebrity sighting:
I was walking back to Union Square from the West Village earlier today after stopping by Pop Up Grocer (lots of Instagram food) when Walton Goggins walked in front of me, smoking a cigarette in some sunglasses and a cream colored suit. Great forehead, hard to miss.
I’ll see you tomorrow!
